"The world wide game "scissors, paper, stone" originated from China, invented by warlords during the Eastern Han Dynasty. Instead of paper, they used the open palm symbol to represent cloth, so "Scissors, Stone, Cloth". The game reached Japan in the early 1640s and one variation was the "Snail or Slug, Snake, Frog" variation.
In this variation, the Frog is afraid of the Snake, the Snake is afraid of the Snail or Slug and the Snail or Slug is afraid of the Frog. This is influenced by the Sansukumi way of thinking where it keeps the 3 objects in a deadlock." - Adam
Two colors of this piece exist. In addition to the standard ivory version, there is a more limited ebony version . Within each color, there were three mold variations based on the game "Rock, Paper, Scissors". The "rock" version shows a clenched fist, the "paper" paper version shows an open palm and the "scissors" version shows two fingers extended in the "peace sign".
